Physical Education (PE)
Our physical education (PE) curriculum aims to:
- Develop positive attitudes towards PE
- Engage and inspire participation in PE lessons
- Enable participation in a wide range of physical activities
- Encourage a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and exercise.
Regular physical activity not only improves health, but also reduces stress, improves concentration, and promotes growth and development. Participation in regular exercise has been shown to have a positive influence on academic achievement and physical and mental wellbeing. P.E. teaches our pupils about the importance of cooperation, teamwork and collaboration, particularly in small, sided games.
Our curriculum ensures that any new knowledge and skills taught builds upon our pupils’ previous learning. This allows our pupils to develop specific sporting skills across a wide range of physical activities. Throughout the curriculum, there is a focus on agility, balance, control and coordination, which begins in Early Years. In Early Years, P.E. focuses on exploring space, developing pupils’ spatial awareness, and their fine and gross motor skills. In key stage 1, pupils will further develop their fundamental movement skills and then in key stage 2, pupils begin to apply these skills across a variety of sports, developing their understanding of group concepts and skills in attacking and defending. They are then able to apply them in intra- and inter -school competitive situations as well as developing teamwork and collaboration.
P.E is valued in our schools, so that all children receive at least two hours of high-quality PE lessons per week. One of these lessons will be with a specialist P.E. teacher. The second lesson is with their class teacher following the Get Set 4 PE scheme. Year 3 and Year 6 classes attend weekly swimming lessons as their second P.E. slot at Latymer Upper School. Our 2023 swimming data is here.
In addition, we provide opportunities for pupils to take part in different extra-curricular activities and initiatives such as Rock climbing and trampolining at Godolphin and Latymer, the Daily Mile and Bike ability workshops. Our specialist P.E. teacher provides both before and after school athletics and netball clubs. These activities build character and help embed our school values or being inspired and resilient. We also ensure all pupils will have the opportunity to represent the school in a sporting event regardless of their level of ability, participating in INSPIRE events that are aimed at the least active or engaged young people, ASPIRE events that are an opportunity for young people to access less traditional sports and HIGHER events, which are performance-based competition aimed at more experienced and talented athletes and/or teams. These higher events include local competitions within the borough such as Majors’ Cup football and the London Youth Games.
We have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. Our sporting achievements this year include in 2022, the Year 6 boys’ football team were crowned the Mayors’ Cup winners. In 2023, the Year 6 boys’ football team were the Mayors Cup North Division Champions and finished runner ups in the overall competition; we were the Hockey Quick Sticks Champions; runners up in the Year 3 and 4 Sports hall Athletics; Year 3 and 4 Dodgeball champions and Year 3 and 4 quad kids champions. We also participated in the Hammersmith & Fulham's nationally recognised Panathlon competition. Panathlon is a national charity which gives young people with disabilities and special educational needs every year the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
